REVIEW, PROGRESS AND ACHEVEMENT
Throughout the last two projects I was concerned about the potential and scope of research, especially primary research and consequently felt when trying to choose this project theme that I needed to find something that gave me the ability to do this. I also wanted the ability to use mediums within film and contemporary styles and this was important as I felt that many of my initial ideas were more sculptural based and subsequently limiting, such as ‘structure’ as although I would be able to do 3d work I would find it difficult to incorporate film and a range of styles. I also feel that since the beginning of the foundation I have really been interested in the technical side of my work and how I can make it more professional and contemporary looking so that there is a stronger focus on the end user and how the audience would react to the quality of my work, meaning I wanted to make sure I was able to still have a 3d and textile element within my work as well as digital. I feel that these two elements will allow me to focus my project as I can see that in my last project that these will be the most successful and have a positive opportunity to develop and perfect my skills, especially as these are methods which I wish to also continue in my future studies at university.
PROJECT CONCEPT
I have explored a range of concepts before coming to my conclusion, such as ‘structure’ and ‘sight vs sound’ however I found when trying to explore a range of ideas, research methods and mediums in these concepts, I was limited and consequently was not content. When I came up with the idea of ‘Comfort’ I was inspired with numerous ideas and ways that I will be able to develop and sustain such a long project.
The my main aim I have for this project is to explore key methods and mediums, textiles, film and photography and I feel other were my strongest points within my previous two projects and am consequently keen to develop this further and improve on my existing skills to create the best work I can. I intend to focus on using digital methods within my project however I am also interested in 3d and sculptural work which may run alongside the my digital work, as inspired by artists such as Tracey Emin. I feel that this will allow me to investigate my interest in the technical side of making, such as choosing fabrics; editing film and how to assemble a piece in a gallery of other intended space. This has led me to also consider the end user within my work and I feel that this project would complement an end user focus strongly as it will allow me to explore emotions and what draws people into different works to make them feel comfortable or less so, thus allowing me to experiment with juxtapositions, gallery spaces and potentially challenging social conventions towards comfort.
Throughout this project I have the scope to research a range of interesting social norms and skews in the realm of comfort and what people associate with this. I will be able to do this through both primary and secondary research through recording interviews with people I know and reading books. I have already started this by reading the book ‘the comfort of things’ which has opened my initial ideas up in an expansive way.
EVALUATION
Throughout my project I intend to reflect upon my practical work daily in a more surface level and practical way, evaluating how I feel I have worked and what works best, as well as a weekly review which will be more in depth and analytical review which will handle a review of the units, making my project as positive and progressive way. I have begun this and feel that it has already been able to improve my practical work, such as changing form more commercial looking work to a contemporary style and I will be able, as is imperative for me, to continue this throughout. These will also obviously be alongside practical evaluation which will be shown through idea development and illumination, and mentioned within my daily reviews. I feel that throughout the last two projects this has been a positive and effective way of working and consequently must carry on.
