I feel that the research i have done throughout this project was probably the highlight of the project, in terms of improvement from the previous two projects. Here i have tried to come to terms with the most effective way of working through research and presenting what i have done whilst showing how it has effected my work visually. By doing more artist research in the earlier stages of the project i was able to clearly make them influence more of my independent studies and therefore improving my work. However i do believe that more extensive research could have been done into each artist as i have mainly just said my feelings towards their work instead of actually seeing where they have gained their inspiration from and their creative process. I believe that both elements are imperative in artist research and therefor i have tried to correct this through two case studies into artists alec soth and david hockney, these were important in my project and the extra research i did on them helped inform my final piece. I also believe that general research was an imperative part of this project as at one point i was stuck for ideas and was not sure how to progress my project in a more sophisticated way and after doing a lot of research into concepts such as the 4 types of greek love and a primary interview with my mum i was able to get to grips with how the rest of my project may lead me.
I feel that there is a lot of idea development within my project as there is a large difference between my initial working and the end work in my sketchbook as i changed the concept of my project as well. However although this is clear i also believe this was probably the weakest section of my project as on reflection, my work is not as bold and effective as i would like it to have been, i believe this was a result of not thinking laterally and expanding my imagination to make it more interesting and innovative. Therefore i believe that although my idea development was positive in some aspects, such as, getting me out of a ‘artist block’ where i did not know how i would change my project for the better, it did not make my work as a high a quality as i would have likes and resulted in me going back to my initial ideas to find inspiration and quality. Despite this i do believe that my approach to idea development had improved throughout this project as i have embraced the use of writing my ideas, creative thumbnails and using mind maps. This has allowed me to continually develop my project and record my thought process instead of keeping it in my head.
My use of materials through this project has been positive as i have tried a lot of different techniques in order to improve my work, both fine art trials and media. This has allowed me to put my own twist oh the medea project in a fine art way. I have expanded my use of methods as i approach a large amount of methods and materials that i had not done before, which although challenged me, also taught me a rage of new things. For example, the digital workshop allowed me to use different programs that i had not even seen before, meaning that i was able to create new work that was unexpected to me, furthermore the analogue workshop showed me different ways of experimenting that i had seen before but never tried, such as using the scanner to put an effect on images and using polaroid printers, i believe this created some very effective work and definitely has expanded my skillset which things that i will use in future studies. However the most challenging was working with old photos as they were harder to edit due to the poor quality and sometimes were hard to fit with other photos as they were so unique and original, such as the family photos.
Evaluation and reflection was obviously imperative throughout this project, as can be seen when comparing my initial work to my final piece, there are clear similarities as they have the same feel and layout. When planning my final piece i wanted to look through my work and evaluate what had worked best and what was less successful, i found that my first images and analoge work was probably the most aesthetically pleasing part for me as it was simple and effective. Therefore i look elements of this and implemented it into my final piece whilst using fewer aspects of my later work. I feel that this meant i had a more successful outcome. I feel that although this was a positive move i could have done more evaluation throughout my work which may have resulted in my independent study work being more successful and refined, therefore would have refined my final piece even more. Although i have done this in some parts of my work, such as the digital editing, this definitely should have been done more and i recognize that on reflection. Unfortunately i did not have any peer or teacher evaluation as i was ill throughout this section of the independent studies, i feel this did have a negative effect on my work as it meant that i was less pushed to think laterally and i do believe my work is not at the best of my ability as a result of this.
