CAPTURE - PRACTICAL DAY

I feel that i made a good head start to spark my project in this studio day. From my mindmap on the first day i decided to focus of the concept of ‘love and hate’ when collecting materials to use within my project. As a result i have voice recorded a range of celebrities and political influencers such as donald trump and barack obama saying they love or hate certain things in interviews or speeches. I also intend to get a range of recording for family members which reflect love and hate. Along with this i found a range of images that give the sense of love and hate emotions which i used in this practical day of the same people from the voice recordings.

From these images i made a series of edits along with quotes from the voice recordings. Once i had made these edits i felt that this was a very effective way of portraying the emotion of love and hate as a result of the way the edits have come out, one harsh and high contrast image beside another soft, high exposure image. The effect that the crowd of mexicans behind donald trump is both ironic and also impactful, whilst the repeat layers of my friend louis is simple and subtle. I have experimented with layering text over the edited images, however i believe this takes the emotion away from them and there could potentially be a more effective way of showing this text.

My experimentation on using the scanner to create a different effect on the image was very successful in my opinion. The trump image was effective as it created a sort of alien effect on trump's face, suiting the subject matter. This was especially present when put next to the scans of the edits of louis as they came across much more mellow and simple, thus creating more of a love feeling.

Although i do like the scan edits of trump, i feel the ones of louis are alot more sucsessful.

Once i have made these edits and felt they were successful, i wanted to concentrate on better ways of printing the images. Due to how my images are black and white, when printed on normal printers they come out with a greenish tinge as a result of the ink used. Therefore i tried printing through polaroid cameras from ‘the impossible project’. I liked the effect of these as although the quality of the images was not perfect, it gave them a vintage feeling really exaggerated the feeling that they originally had of love and hate, furthermore in this case the green tinge actually improved the atmosphere of them. These polaroids also allowed me to write on the blank space, however i feel that once i had written on one it did not give the correct feeling or quality, therefore i want to keep looking for another way to present these quotes. Despite this i feel that the simple presentation that these polaroids allow me to do, as they are so small,m is very effective and simplistic as it allows the viewer to focus solely on the images.

After the success of these prints i trialled the the other polaroid zip printer. I believe that these were the most successful prints. As they were smaller the quality of them was better, making the end result of a higher quality, furthermore as i was able to print more i could experiment with a range of different ways of presenting them, my final presentation decision was, again, very simple, however i feel this was best as it was effective and atmospheric. Another aspect of these images that i liked was the pink and blue tinges n the photos of louis, whereas the images of trump were just black and white, this meant there was a real feeling of love and hate.
