My first reaction to the quote and subject topic that i found was to draw faces in a ‘line’ style and by experimenting with different types of line drawing, from this i found a free flowing style that i felt suited my personal preference and the subject the most. I originally started by experimenting with ink drawings and collages as i find ink to be an easy and effective material to produce line and high contrast images, an effect which i was aiming for. Although this was very effective and gave the aesthetics that i was aiming for i also wanted to look further into the ways of creating line drawings to create more of a feeling and atmosphere that suites the quote more coherently. This was a result of my first ink drawing in this collage as i felt that it was very clean cut and precise, whereas i feel that the emotion behind the quite portrays a more scrambled and messy feeling that the ink did not represent accurately.

Consequently went on to looking into other materials that could potentially create a better result. These materials were biro, watercolour, acrylic and monoprinting. Although all these were effective to an extent one stuck out to me and the most effective. With the biro it created a chaotic atmosphere that i wanted as it allowed me to create a lot of different lines making the image messy and unclear, giving the style of drawing an even more unrealistic effect which i like. The acrylic paint was definitely something i wanted to look into further due to its rough and deep looking effect it can create when applied fairly dry. Despite this i prefer the effect of the monoprints that i made as a result of the slightly untidy and blurred around the edges look that they create. I feel this suits my subject topic of creating a crowd of faces and presents the disoriented feeling that the quote also portrays effectively, moreover allows me to layer images with ease and use different materials and technique to gain a range of effects, therefore making this medium my main focus for the rest of my studies.

From this i have made a series of pieces and collages using the form of monoprinting to explore a range of ways i can effectively portray the correct message and emotion.

From this experiment i believe i have made some good work as the use of acrylic creates a melancholy atmosphere around the images, i also believe this is a result of the black and white filter, high contrast and grainy feel of the photos. Although the poor quality of the images was not on purpose and was a result of cameras phone images and the strains of heavy editing, it actually makes a good and relevant effect, thus making it a happy coincidence. however i am aware that the editing of some of these images need major refinement and improvement on my technical skills on programs such as Photoshop, however i have not previously used Photoshop and it is something that i will need to look into deeply as i have a high interest in fine art photography.

From these images, it was obvious to me that the progression from these images is for me to draw onto the actual body in the same style to create an even more personal and intense feeling so the feeling from the quote can be shown stronger and more accurately as the topic of cancer affects people's bodies, meaning that the idea of actually drawing onto the skin would be appropriate. The outcome of this experiment was extremely positive as i feel it gave my work an edge as the images, after being edited, made an mysterious feeling, and despite my inted to come across more personal, instead felt more reserved and alone, which in fact also links into the concept of the quote as it shows the isolation that cancer can create at the same time as making the subject topic blindingly obvious and therefore leaving some space for interpretation for the viewer, for example these images may also represent self harm or other topics based around depression. If i had more time for this project i would liked to have explored this idea in more depth as i feel that with further refinement and exploration of my ideas it could become more effective, such as a series with a range of people and in other sections of the body which may be more intimate or more associated with the topic of cancer.
