Originally before this fine art project i saw myself leaning towards the photography pathway and fine art photography in terms of where i stand within ahrt design and media, however since starting this project i have begun to change my mind and am questioning whether fine art would be a more appropriate route in terms of pathways as it is more open to interpretation, allowing me to further explore a wider range of materials such as printing as this was a section of the week which i heavily enjoyed.
My abilities this week have definitely been challenged in a number of different ways. For example the book making day forced me to expand my creativity and push my ideas to the limit conceptually due to the heavy focus on the term ‘lateral thinking’, meaning i was unable to stay in my comfort zone and required me to explore different emotions and concepts within my work along with thinking in a more narrative sense. Despite this i feel my final product was a success as it became a more contemporary style in itis meaning and backstory meaning its message was up to interpretation to the viewer. I also enjoyed the fact that the final piece became a book and therefore made it seem more interactive and allowed the viewer to potentially interact with my work and the story in a more literal and personal way. Moreover although i was taken out of my comfort zone i do not feel as though this limited my ability to put a personal take on the task. Another time i feel i was challenged in the first week was during the printing workshop. Generally within art and fashion i default to neutral and monotone colours, especially black and white as often i find it not only fits my personal taste but is also fits to my usual style of work and is easier to work with. However in the lino workshop these colours were not an option, thus forcing me to use other more vibrant colours which i would usually avoid. This was useful to me as it made me explore concepts such as the colour wheel and warm and cool tones. Although i was not content with the range of colours in all my prints, for example warm blue layered over warm yellow, many of them did result in successful outcomes, such as cool blue over cool red and cool blue alone, which gave my print a more atmospheric feel and more emotion and elegance behind the print than if i had used black or grey, especially as my design was situated in the sea meaning the colours available worked well with the subject matter.
I feel that the drawing week has definitely impacted my work throughout this first week of the fine art project as the idea of ‘the creative process’ and ‘double diamond’ has influenced the way i worked throughout my independent studies, allowing me to refine and reflect of my work in order to achieve more refined and better outcomes. Although this has meant that have produced less content than i usually would i can definitely see a comparative improvement within my work and a strength within my project and thus making the new way of thinking ‘worth it’. Especially as there is still as substantial amount of work, in my opinion, given the short time frame.
